BREAKING:
The Teamsters applaud Governor Gavin Newsom for signing Assembly Bill 288
(AB 288) into law, allowing private sector workers to organize under the state’s
Public Employee Relations Board when the National Labor Relations Board fails
to protect workers’ rights. Teamsters in California across all industries lobbied
and testified in support of this groundbreaking legislation, which holds union-busting
companies accountable when workers exercise their right to join a union.
“Gigantic multinational corporations routinely retaliate against workers, and they’re
usually left with no recourse after waiting for years before decisions are even issued
in their cases,” said Chris Griswold, Teamsters International Vice President and
Co-Chair of Teamsters California. “We have a responsibility to protect working people
whenever their rights are violated. AB 288 ensures those protections are enforceable.”
AB 288’s ratification comes as billionaires like Jeff Bezos attempt to undo decades of
federal labor law by seeking to have the NLRB declared unconstitutional.
“AB 288 is a game-changer for workers in California,” said Peter Finn, Teamsters
Western Region Vice President and Co-Chair of Teamsters California. “More than
70 percent of workers want to be in a union, but billionaires like Jeff Bezos are flouting
federal law and trampling workers’ organizing rights. With the right to organize
guaranteed under state law, we can show that a strong economy is built through
solidarity, not CEOs’ arrogance.”
Thank you, Governor Newsom, for taking this crucial step to help protect
California Teamsters from abusive employers!
